On Sunday May 17th, we will celebrate a festive Ascension Day worship service with music by Dietrich Buxtehude. According to the gospel of St. Luke, 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, he ascended into heaven. In the church we often celebrate this festival on the Sunday closest to this date. This event is recorded in both the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds. A small ensemble of string, brass and timpani will accompany the choir in their singing.
