Johann Pachelbel was a German- Lutheran composer and organist who was born in 1653 and died in 1706. Similar to his contemporary Dietrich Buxtehude who brought the Northern German organ tradition to its peak in Lubeck, he brought the southern German organ tradition to its peak in Nurnberg.

Pachelbel’s music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; unfortunately today, his work is limited to his Canon in D. This has become a one of the most popular wedding processionals. This year, for our Wedding at Cana Sunday worship service on January 24th, we will feature the music of Pachelbel
featuring the LOTI Choir and the Lake String Quartet will play.

In the Syriac Christian Church, the Sunday before the beginning of Lent is marked as Cana Sunday. The gospel that day recalls Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding of Cana where he turned water into wine. It is a day to celebrate the gifts of family and food before the penitential season of fasting begins and to be reminded that God’s abundance will be shared again.
