Welcome to Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church!
No matter who you are or where you come from, you are welcome here.
In the 1930’s, in the midst of the Great Depression, Dr. William Passavant Christy, a pastor in a Lutheran congregation in North Minneapolis, came to the vacated and boarded up church at Lake of the Isles searching for an organ. The depression had been hard on the former congregation and they were forced to close their doors. There was no longer an organ in the church, but Christy was surprised to discover a beautiful sanctuary with no worshipping congregation. He likened the church to the story of Christ’s first miracle at the wedding in Cana. The church was as empty as the stone jars standing in the corner, but Christy knew a miracle could happen if the jars could be filled with water. And when they were, the jars became the bearers of the finest wine. Christy often attributed the new life of the congregation to the grace of God and the hard working men and women who filled the empty shell of a church with a Christ-like spirit and energy.
Nearly 80 years later, that story of Dr. William Passavant Christy continues to inspire our congregation. We believe that by God’s grace, miracles happen every day that change people’s lives. And we also believe that it takes hard work and energy to keep the church’s life vibrant and forward moving.
