“American Grammy Award-winning composer and beloved Minnesota artist, Stephen Paulus premiered his first opera, The Village Singer, in 1979, to great acclaim. This comic, one-act chamber work, rich with Paulus’ lush hymn settings, speaks to the heart of the mission of Raison d’Être Opéra, as it tells the poignant story of Candace Whitcomb, the church choir soloist whose established reputation is threatened by the emergence of gifted young soprano. The Benefit Reading, featuring soprano Lucy Thrasher in the title role, along with a distinguished cast of local singers, is intended to raise funds for a full production in early 2024.” ~ Gary Briggle, RDO Executive Director
